Although the very nature of Iran’s regime makes it well-nigh impossible for films that criticise the status quo to be produced and shown, over the years, several such movies have made it to cinemas outside the country. Jafar Panahi’s The Circle (2000) and Offside (2006) are just two that come to mind, particularly in terms of their portrayal of the treatment of women. However, The Seed of The Sacred Fig is perhaps the angriest and most troubling example we’ve had in recent times. Indeed, the force of its emotion is its main strength and also arguably one of its flaws.
